Questions about MVGEM

We’re still building the organization. These answers explain what we’re working toward and what you can do now. Plans may change as people, resources and practical needs come together.

What is MVGEM?

A forming Mahoning Valley community organization focused on geology, mineralogy, paleontology, fossil collecting, lapidary arts and earth-science education. We want to make learning, collecting, making and sharing knowledge more practical and accessible.

Is MVGEM already a nonprofit?

We’re in the organizing stage, developing the structure for an educational organization. MVGEM is not currently an IRS-recognized 501(c)(3). Future incorporation and tax-exempt recognition are part of the direction being considered, not a status we already hold.

Do I need experience to get involved?

No. Beginners, experienced collectors, lapidaries, students and curious people are all welcome to express interest. You don’t need to know the answer before you ask the question.

Are you accepting members?

We’re collecting membership interest while the membership arrangements are being developed. The interest form is not a paid application, and it doesn’t require you to commit to a particular role.

Are you looking for board participants?

Yes. We’re looking for people interested in helping develop the board and the organization. Experience with finances, governance, education, accessibility, partnerships, fundraising, facilities or equipment can all be useful. Contact us if you’d like to discuss it.

What activities are planned?

Field trips, educational programs, specimen identification and preparation, public displays, guest speakers, member demonstrations, beginner and youth programming, and lapidary learning. Shared equipment and regular workshop access will develop as resources allow. Everything will not start at once.

Will there be field trips?

Yes. Our first Sylvania Fossil Park outing took place on October 3, 2026. We plan to make that an annual trip and are exploring other collecting and educational destinations. Each listing will explain costs, access information and participation requirements. Future dates will be announced when confirmed.

Do you already have a lapidary workshop?

A shared, accessible workshop is a major goal. We are still working on space, equipment, funding and operating procedures. Do not assume a machine or open-shop session is available unless it has been specifically announced.

Would members be able to work on personal projects?

That is part of the proposed model. Access would depend on available equipment, scheduling, orientation and tool-specific safety requirements. Membership by itself would not authorize someone to operate every machine.

Could I sell something made with shared equipment?

The working plan does not automatically prohibit selling a personal project made with shared tools. Sustained commercial production that affects equipment life, materials or other participants’ access may need separate limits or arrangements. These policies are still being developed.

Will there be dues?

Dues have not been formally adopted. An individual membership around $25 per year has been discussed as a working estimate, not a current price or checkout offer. Reduced or waived dues are part of the intended approach where cost would prevent participation.

Would reduced dues require financial paperwork?

The intention is ordinarily to let people explain their circumstances in their own words without formal financial or eligibility documentation. A separately funded program may have its own requirements.

Is every activity wheelchair accessible?

We cannot promise that every field location, building or activity will suit every access need. We will share the details we can verify and seek practical ways to reduce barriers. Feedback from people who use the arrangements matters more than assumptions about what they need.

Can I participate if I cannot reliably speak?

We are developing multiple ways to communicate, including typed contributions, visual materials, written follow-up and remote participation where practical. Tell us what works for you so it can be considered while an activity is being planned.

Can I request an accommodation?

Yes. Email MVGEM330@gmail.com with what would help you participate. You do not need to send a medical history. Specific arrangements depend on the activity and resources available.

Do I have to be an expert to volunteer or teach?

You do not have to be an expert to volunteer. Organizing, photography, displays, recordkeeping and helping with events are useful too. If you’d like to teach or demonstrate a skill, tell us what you have in mind; instructor procedures are still developing.

Who will make organizational decisions?

The working governance model assigns legal and financial oversight to a board and ordinary operations to an executive director. The board and governance documents are still being developed. Ordinary membership is not currently proposed as ownership or a vote on every organizational decision.

Will meetings be recorded?

Significant organizational meetings may be recorded for accuracy and written follow-up when practical. Participants will be informed. Confidential or sensitive discussions may need different handling. Adopted minutes, when applicable, remain the official record of board decisions.

Can young people participate?

Youth and family programming are part of the plan. Age, supervision and equipment requirements will depend on the activity and will be stated in the listing. We are not promising unrestricted machine access.

Can I donate equipment, specimens or materials?

Contact us first. What we can responsibly accept depends on condition, usefulness, safety, storage and transportation. We’re handling inquiries directly while the organization forms and are not representing contributions as tax-deductible.

Where will activities happen?

We have used the Warren Masonic Temple for public activity, and longer-term space arrangements are still developing. Check each event’s confirmed location and access details. Do not assume there is a permanently staffed shop or a drop-in meeting schedule.

What if my question isn’t answered?

Ask it. Questions are useful while an organization is forming. We’ll give you an answer when one is settled, or explain what is still being worked out.

How do I get involved now?

Use the interest form or email MVGEM330@gmail.com. Tell us whether you’re interested in membership, volunteering, teaching, board service or simply hearing about activities.
