Here’s another opportunity for MVGEM members and friends to get together around geology! The Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Geological Survey is hosting Ohio Geology Discovery Day on Saturday, November 7, from 10 AM to 2 PM at the H.R. Collins Laboratory at Alum Creek State Park. The free event offers hands-on learning about rocks, minerals, fossils, and Ohio’s geology for visitors of all ages.
MVGEM is planning to attend and bring a small selection of interesting local fossils for discussion with Survey geologists. Among the material we’re investigating are labeled Youngstown-area plant fossils, including a Lepidodendron specimen, that raise fascinating questions about the Mahoning Valley’s prehistoric history. We’re looking forward to learning more about these specimens and the geological record they represent.

We contacted the Geological Survey about accessibility and specimen identification. Geologist and Ohio Rocks! educator Molly Hunt confirmed that the laboratory, activities, and lab spaces are fully accessible. Visitors may bring a few specimens for identification, though staffing for that service is limited, so it’s best to select only a handful.
This is an ODNR event, not an MVGEM-organized program. We’re excited to attend, meet fellow geology enthusiasts, and make connections for future educational opportunities. If you’re interested, come explore with us!
